DEMAND Congressional action against Trump’s mass detention regime

The shocking human rights abuses taking place in Delaney Hall were highlighted in the news this week. Delaney is a detention facility (read: for-profit concentration camp) in Newark, New Jersey, and just one of more than a dozen ICE-funded prisons run by GEO Group. GEO received a $1 billion contract from ICE to run it. Yes, these are your tax dollars.

The 1,000-bed facility holds immigrants who have been in the U.S. for decades. There are parents and spouses of U.S. citizens, Dreamers like the 18-year-old pulled out weeks before her high school graduation, pregnant women, the elderly, and overwhelmingly people with no criminal records at all.

Detainees are living under horrific conditions. There are reports of maggot-ridden food, overcrowding, extreme heat, scalding showers, and dangerously inadequate healthcare with no doctor on site. And Trump is only escalating efforts to make “quotas” on detainees.

Congress delayed the vote in May for the $72 billion bill to fund DHS and ICE, but now our representatives are back in session. Trump has recently uncoupled the $1.8 billion “slush fund” from the bill, which could make it easier to pass.

Call Representative Victoria Spartz at 202-225-2276 and demand she investigate ICE detaining thousands of immigrants under dangerous conditions. You can follow the script below provided by Indivisible.

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a constituent from Westfield, IN. I am calling today to ask that Representative Victoria Spartz publicly use every tool at her disposal to reject the violence happening at Delaney Hall and detention centers around the country.

Specifically, I urge Representative Victoria Spartz to do the following:

1. Draw attention to the conditions at Delaney Hall and detention centers around the country by visiting Delaney Hall or local sites

2. Investigate ICE detaining thousands of immigrants under dangerous conditions

3. Oppose any additional funding for ICE or Border Patrol

I expect Victoria Spartz to use her power as my elected official to demand that dignity for immigrants and reject any expansions to Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda.

DEMAND that the House pass the War Powers Resolution Act and end the illegal war with Iran

Republican leadership canceled a vote on a resolution to end the Iran war just before Congressional recess because it appeared the legislation was about to pass the House. This week, amidst new flare ups in the war that could lead to more death and chaos, the vote could come up.

The American public firmly opposes this unauthorized and unprovoked war. On top of endangering people in the region, and ruining our national reputation abroad, the cost of living in the U.S. continues to soar to pay for this violent folly.

Email Representative Victoria Spartz and demand that she block any funding for this war, use the War Powers Resolution to force votes to end the war, and hold the Trump Administration accountable for their crimes and corruption! You can use the following script from Indivisible, or provide your information to Indivisible so they can submit the email on your behalf.

Dear Representative Spartz,

I am writing to demand immediate action in response to President Trump’s unjust and unprovoked war on Iran.

On top of harming and endangering people abroad, the cost of living continues to soar at home to pay for this violence. We have seen the human, moral, and financial costs of unilateral regime-change wars. We cannot allow history to repeat itself.

You have both the authority and the obligation to act. I urge you to:

• Block any funding for this war.

• Use War Powers Resolutions to force votes to end this war.

Streetside Democracy Defenders, Westfield, IN

Streetside Democracy Defenders is a group of committed Americans and community members who stand steadfast for our Constitution and Rule of Law. All are welcome to join them in their weekly peaceful protests.

From our Indivisible friend and “Streetsider” Jim:

We’re your neighbors in Westfield, Carmel, Noblesville, and Fishers - various people on any given day who spend an hour or two rallying FOR better government and AGAINST corruption and authoritarian rule. Just like Indivisible, we’re neighbors from all walks of life and different places on the political spectrum.

What we agree on is simple—each of us has a voice; we express our hopes for a stronger democracy by stating our views peacefully in public. We rally on sidewalks along several intersections in our Northern Indy ’burbs every week from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (see schedule below).

What’s the event like? Fun! Fresh air, sunshine (usually), friendly neighbors, supportive honks & waves from drivers. Sure, there’s an occasional grump who raises a thumbs down, or maybe a different digit... free speech, after all! You can bring a sign for your favorite pro-democracy theme, or the group always has extra signs to share. Usually there’s a boombox with some lively music to inspire us.

You can stand, walk, or bring a folding chair. Chat, wave, raise your sign, express your voice - stop by and join us for a visit or the whole 2 hours. See you out there!
