Donald Trump has displayed an unprecedented use of Presidential power to enrich himself and his family and friends.

Since his 2024 re-election, the President has added an estimated $4 to $5 billion to his family’s wealth, primarily driven by cryptocurrency ventures, international brand licensing, and active stock trading. By bypassing traditional norms—such as placing his assets into a blind trust—Trump has effectively turned his public office into a highly lucrative commercial platform. Independent trackers from investigative outlets and congressional groups note that this unprecedented financial growth has been fueled by the immense visibility and policy decisions of his second term.

The primary vehicles driving this revenue span several digital and global sectors. Cryptocurrency ventures like World Liberty Financial and the $TRUMP meme coin have generated billions in paper wealth and drawn heavy investment from foreign nationals. Additionally, his federal disclosures have revealed that Trump’s trust executed over 3,700 active stock trades in early 2026, often involving energy and defense sectors tied to major policy announcements.

This massive scale of monetization has sparked immense debate surrounding conflicts of interest and public policy. While there are no public statutes that completely prevent the President from making money or owning businesses, the U.S. Constitution sets strict anti-corruption rules known as the Emoluments Clauses. These rules strictly prohibit the President from receiving payments, gifts, or profits from foreign governments or states without congressional consent and prevent the President from receiving any money from the federal or state governments beyond the President’s official salary. Critics argue that these actions compromise the integrity of the office. In April, ranking member Jamie Raskin of the House Judiciary Committee introduced two resolutions demanding that Trump comply with the Constitution’s foreign and domestic Emoluments Clauses.

“The Framers wrote several provisions into the Constitution to limit the President to his handsome salary in office and to keep him from lining his pockets with the money of the taxpayers or free-flowing bribes and gifts from foreign monarchs and governments. These Emoluments Clauses are not an advisory recommendation for best practices. They are binding constitutional commands to prevent the corruption and prostitution of our government. Every other president got that basic point. Only Donald Trump has turned the presidency into a for-profit enterprise.”

The White House and the Trump Organization have denied all wrongdoing, maintaining that all financial transactions are legally declared through public ethics filings, and that the operations remain transparent and lawful.

What can we do to restore transparency, integrity, and ethics to the federal office?

The Government Accountability Office and the Office of Government Ethics provide reports on public policy, and individual and agency ethics documents.

Congressional oversight committees

• The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is tasked with ensuring the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of the federal government.

• The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) is the primary oversight committee in the U.S. Senate, which studies the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of all agencies and
  departments.

Nonpartisan research organizations
